Beautiful timber floors can look warm and attractive however without some underfloor insulation, your floor is the only thing between you and the great outdoors.
Homes generally have ceiling insulation and new homes will also have wall insulation. But often with suspended floors, underfloor insulation is overlooked which can, especially in these cooler months, contribute to as much as 20% of heat loss.
With timber floors, there is a large space of cold air between the ground and the underside of the floor. Heat can be lost and draughts can enter through the floorboards making your home cold and uncomfortable. Carpeting and underlay help provide some insulation however to maximise heat retention, underfloor insulation is recommended to create an effective thermal barrier.
Insulation performance is measured by the R-value. The higher the R-value the more effective the product is.
NHS stocks products to assist in underfloor insulation that is suitable for suspended timber floors, resulting in a warmer environment and reducing energy costs. And they can be used for new or existing homes!

Bradford Optimo Underfloor insulation.
Unlike the EPS product of Expol, Optimo is more like your traditional insulation blanket, made of glass wool. The batts are specially stiffened and treated to provide a moisture resistant underfloor insulation.
With an R-Value of R2.1 and R2.5, Bradford Optimo boasts one of the highest levels of thermal performance on the market.
The Optimo™ sub-floor insulation product itself is covered by a 70 year performance warranty.
Additionally, Optimo can also act acoustically in addition to thermally. Testing showed Optimo had superior qualities in reducing transmission noise.
